Authentic Tunisian Salad (Salata Mechouia)

Instructions

  1. 1

Preheat your oven to 220°C (425°F) or prepare a grill. Place whole peppers, tomatoes, and the whole onion on a baking sheet.

  2. 2

Roast the vegetables for 25-30 minutes, turning occasionally, until the skins are charred and blistered all over.

  3. 3

Remove vegetables from oven and place in a bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and let them steam for 10 minutes to make peeling easier.

  4. 4

Peel the skins off the peppers, tomatoes, and onion. Remove seeds from the peppers.

  5. 5

Chop all the roasted vegetables into small dice and place in a mixing bowl.

  6. 6

Mince the garlic cloves and add to the vegetables along with olive oil, lemon juice, ground coriander, and caraway.

  7. 7

Season with salt and pepper to taste. Mix well and let the salad rest for 15 minutes to allow flavors to meld.

  8. 8

Transfer the salad to a serving platter. Arrange quartered hard-boiled eggs around the edges.

  9. 9

Flake the tuna over the top of the salad. Garnish with black olives and capers.

  10. 10

Serve at room temperature with crusty bread or pita for an authentic Tunisian experience.

Chef's Note

"This vibrant Tunisian salad brings the smoky sweetness of roasted vegetables together with the Mediterranean flavors of tuna, olives, and capers. Serve it with crusty bread as a light meal or alongside grilled meats for an authentic North African experience."
