Apple Crumble
Instructions
- 1
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Butter a 9-inch square baking dish or similar sized ovenproof dish.
- 2
In a large bowl, combine the diced apples with granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Mix well to coat all the apple pieces evenly.
- 3
Transfer the apple mixture to your prepared baking dish, spreading it out into an even layer.
- 4
In a medium bowl, combine the flour, oats, brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, and salt. Mix well.
- 5
Add the cold, cubed butter to the flour mixture. Using your fingertips or a pastry cutter, work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs with some larger butter pieces remaining.
- 6
Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apples, covering them completely.
- 7
Bake for 35-40 minutes, until the topping is golden brown and crispy, and you can see the apple filling bubbling around the edges.
- 8
Remove from the oven and let cool for at least 15 minutes before serving. The filling will be very hot and needs time to set slightly.
- 9
Serve warm with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or custard for the ultimate comfort dessert.
Chef's Note
"The secret to a perfect apple crumble is using a mix of tart and sweet apples, and keeping your butter really cold for the crumble topping - this creates those irresistible buttery clusters that everyone loves!"
